Unless you do your homework you're not likely to find any of Taormina's great eateries simply by walking down the main drag and looking for the fanciest façade. Arguably Sicily's most famous chef, Piero D'Agostino has built a hillside eatery with less than idyllic exterior but worthy of the food pilgrims that come in search of his innovative new Italian cuisine. The space is humble by foodie standards, a stylish dining room of dark-wood chairs under an exposed rustic beam ceiling and all of glass facing the sea. An outdoor terrace would seem the logical choice for summertime dining, but be forewarned that it faces a rail line and roadway making for a noisier than expected experience.
The Food
With over ten eateries under his helm, Piero D’Agostino forges some of his best recipes for this 1-Star Michelin eatery with seafood crudo appetizers, buffalo-infused tomato salad and lavish pasta courses that are small in size but massive in flavor. Main course ranges from tuna and shrimp specialties with a nod towards traditional Messina cuisine to grilled meats topped with occasional truffle or special-side of the day. Don’t miss the arrangement of soufflés for desert as well as top-notch spin on crème brulee.
